What Does Depression Mean?

There are more than twenty million teenagers and adults throughout the U.S. alone that are affected with the illness known as depression. The symptoms of depression can often be crippling to the individual that is experiencing them, and it is an illness that has several different faces.

Post-partum depression, clinical depression, and bi-polar are just a few of the types of depression. It is an illness that can affect the individual’s thoughts, body, mood, mannerisms, and every other aspect of their life, which can cause a lack of will which often makes it almost impossible to perform even the simplest of tasks. Depression goes much deeper than when a person is merely upset or just feeling down, as these are normal feelings that everyone experiences at one time or another. Some of the common indications of depression are listed below.
  • Lack of energy
  • Feeling the constant need to sleep, or hardly sleeping at all
  • Mood swings
  • Extreme changes in the appetite
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Feeling that they are helpless or hopeless
  • A lack of interest for regular activities or hobbies
  • A lack of being able to concentrate

Just as it is common for different types of symptoms to occur in individuals that have various illnesses and diseases, the same holds true for individuals that are suffering from depression.
