What are Common Symptoms of Major Depression?

Major depression is a serious disorder that can cause individuals to experience a wide variety of different symptoms, some of which can become so severe that it is often hard for individuals with this type of depression to carry on with their normal routine responsibilities and activities. In many cases of major depression the individual will show a lack of desire to engage in various hobbies and other types of activities that used to bring them a great deal of satisfaction and enjoyment. In many patients low levels of mood can be seen that envelops every aspect of their life. It is often hard for patients to concentrate normally, and many times they are unable to make important decisions.  Other feelings that a patient generally experiences with moderate depression would include feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, self-hatred, and helplessness. Other common symptoms of moderate depression include the following:   

  • Poor memory
  • Problems with regular sleeping pattern: sleeping way too much or not enough
  • Thoughts about death and suicide
  • Suicide attempts
  • It is important to seek adequate treatment when signs are noticed of moderate depression, because when this condition is left untreated, it can lead to severe depression.
