There are a variety of different categories that specific types of depression are categorized under, and one that is known as being similar to chronic depression is called dysthymic disorder. As with other forms of depression, there are specific symptoms that can generally be noticed in individuals that have dysthymic disorder. Some of the most common symptoms are as follows:

  • The individual becoming withdrawn – Avoiding friends and family members.
  • A change in thinking patterns – Problems concentrating and problems with decision making, low levels of self-esteem, and feelings of guilt.
  • Physical changes in the individuals well-being – The constant feeling of fatigue often causes the individual to feel tired even after numerous hours have been spent sleeping. Others often have problems getting an adequate amount of sleep, and they will often end up lying in bed for several hours during the night.
  • Changes in the way the individual feels – Gloomy feelings, avoiding activities, fatigue, irritability, hopelessness, and helplessness. It is not at all uncommon for the individual to experience bouts of crying and sadness, anger that is unexpected, and a loss in sexual interest.
  • Noticeable changes in the appetite – Either having no appetite, or overeating.
