Common Methods Used to Treat Depression

Generally when an individual is suffering from the illness known as depression, their family physician or psychiatrist will prescribe a prescription medication that is known as an antidepressant. There are many different types of antidepressants that are used to help relieve the symptoms that are commonly associated with depression. They are used to cause a higher level of serotonin, which are neurotransmitters in the individual’s central nervous system. These types of drugs also have the ability to mimic these neurotransmitters. Most of the antidepressants that are prescribed to patients are used because of the ability they have to increase the concentration of serotonin. The way this is achieved is because the serotonin that is removed from the areas near the nerve cells is decreased. To list a few of the most common antidepressants that patients are prescribed would include Paxil (paroxetine, Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sentraline), Luvox (fluvoxamine,
   

Lexapro (escitalopram, and Celexa. In some cases of depression, there are some physicians that will recommend that the patient also include psychotherapy in the treatment plan that has been put in place. Changes made to the lifestyle can also be very helpful in alleviating the symptoms that have been caused by depression.
